Unfolding Collection

When I decided to call the collection The Unfolding Collection, it was because the horizon unfolds, the morning too, the evening unfolds as do the mountains, and likewise the flowers. The spiral of the shell unfolds. And so does our life.

I came to the realization that now is the time to gather all the lost dreams and let them bloom again, when I decided to paint the Dogwood Collection. I painted the blooms in all the colors I could find, wanting these watercolor paintings to be wonderful. I made an agreement with myself to take my time with them, to paint them the best I could. My desire was to create a collection that would make people fall in love with Dogwood Blossoms, if they hadn’t already.

In the South, Pansies brighten our gardens winter through spring.
The Pansies Watercolor Paintings are part of the Pansy Watercolor Collection. It consists of series of eight small 7 x 10-inch watercolor paintings, plus a 10 x 10-inch and this 18 x 24-inch painting. Fascinated by the array of color and design in these lovely garden flowers, I purposefully documented their variety in photographs from which the pansy paintings were created.

I do believe it was my grandmother’s stories about her flowers, her gardens, and her hydrangea bush that made me fall in love with gardening. I find a walk in a garden to be the perfect medicine for just about anything. Gardens restore my soul.

…there’s something deep inside of us that longs for that first garden even now. Our earthly gardens are the next best thing, at least my grandmother’s garden was.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that one of the very first stories in the Bible is about walking in a garden. So beautiful and peaceful, there’s something deep inside of us that longs for that place, even now. Our earthly gardens are the next best thing, just like my grandmother’s was.
